Story
Thanks for takingthe time to visit my JustGiving page!
I’m here to fundraiseas part of Northumbria University in order for them to help the charityVolunteer Zambia. The money that I raise will help to send me out to Zambia for8 weeks where I will be coaching netball to underprivileged girls and helpingto set up programs that will run long after I have left the country.
In doing this I will be educating the children on the power of sport, and how it can develop individual life skills as well as bringing joy to allthat take part in sport! Whilst out in Zambia I will also be helping to developnew coaches and make sports and coaching more sustainable within Zambia.
To help run this project I must raise enough money to fund our travelsto Zambia and help with charities whilst we are there. Any amount of moneywould be a fantastic donation to help with such a huge and life changingexperience
What is theVolunteer Zambia Project?
Volunteer Zambiais an international sport programme run by the Wallace Group – a collaborationbetween leading UK ‘sport’ universities who support and work with the leadingZambian sports NGO, Sport in Action. Together, they use sport to engage, educate and empower young people in Zambia and the UK. Each summer the 7universities of the Wallace Group collaborate to send students and staffmembers out to live in Zambia for 6 months from the period of May – Octoberwith the main aim of building capacity within sport development.
This includessupporting the development of more effective talent pathways in the key sportsof netball, basketball, women’s football and in developing the skills of youngZambians especially in coaching and coach education, officiating, leadership, and wider sports volunteering.
Zambia is one of the poorest countries in the world, with high rates ofHIV/AIDS playing an exacerbating role. An overwhelming 1.2 million children areorphaned in Zambia due to AIDS in a population of just 17 million. However, these statistics are improving with the continuous, global support of projectslike these.
Myself and everyone from Northumbria on the 2023/24 volunteer team areextremely excited, committed and driven for this opportunity, and are workingequally hard behind the scenes to raise the funds to go out to Zambia andchange young peoples lives through sport.
Every donationmakes a difference and helps towards the changes and impact we are hoping tomake!
