Story
Walking over hot coals in my bare feet - what am I thinking??!!
Having witnessed the trauma of Thomas, (my then 7 year old child) badly burn the sole of his bare foot after accidentally walking on hot coals negligently left on a Moroccan beach, this feels a hugely daunting and very personal challenge for me - and of course, for my family who cannot comprehend why I would want to do this! The memory of Thomas’ poorly blistered foot is still very vivid.
Nor is this the kind of challenge that I would easily or eagerly sign up for - I am cautious, anxious and risk averse by nature. There is no doubt that I will be the biggest bag of nerves on the night - a somewhat tricky position when I am hosting the event too!
So just why, I hear you all cry?!
A Firewalk is a huge personal challenge and one that will enable Cornwall Mind to continue to support those in our communities facing mental health challenges. Throughout my life, too many people I love have battled significant mental health struggles and illness. Mental health services are overstretched and many rely on charities like Mind, who can and do save lives.
Our wonderful Cornwall Mind staff and volunteers provide vital well-being and recovery support and services to anyone who needs us. As with any small, local charity, funding is always an issue. Although we are affiliated to Mind (the national charity), Cornwall Mind is independently registered, dependent on fundraising and donations to continue our vital work in the community. We have seen a huge increase in people needing support during the COVID-19 pandemic - it really has impacted the mental wellbeing of people, and we are currently facing a mental health emergency.
So this is my turn to do something and give back!
Please support me so that my incredible colleagues can continue to be there for anyone and for everyone who needs us. Thank you so much - your support will help me to dig deep and find the courage to face my fear when every cell in my body will want to run and hide!
