Story
The one thing I said to myself before coming to the University of Exeter, was that I wanted to do something completely out of my comfort zone, something new, something exciting and something that would make a difference … And I’ve found that, and more…
In August 2021 I will be taking on a 6 day trek up the highest free standing mountain in the world; Kilimanjaro. Not only will this be an experience of a life time, but it’s all to raise money for an amazing charity: The Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF). This charity aims to research and raise awareness of two serious diseases: Meningitis and Septicaemia.
As a student, raising awareness for the charity is something I feel more and more strongly about each day as we are one of the largest groups at risk of this disease. 25% of teenagers carry it without knowing and if it develops into Meningococcal disease the death rate is 50% if left untreated. It can kill within 12 hours and is responsible for more deaths of children under 5 worldwide than Malaria, Measles, Tetanus and AIDS combined. These figures are SHOCKING and something needs to change.
MRF are providing better vaccines, health systems for diagnosis and treatment in children and provide support to those who have survived Meningitis worldwide. But they need our support. Throughout this crazy time, along with many others, this charity has been struggling. But this is the time where they need all the more support.
So, it’s time to make meningitis a global health priority and you can do this today by donating. Your donation could save a life or ensure a survivor of this disease can live their life to the fullest. Who knows, your donation could allow someone to complete this challenge one day too!
