Story
Our story starts with our very own super hero, Xavier who's also known as Xman. 4 years ago Xavier was born with a head bleed which after spending over a week in Neonatal Intensive Care lead to a diagnosis of Haemophilia Severe A being made.
Haemophilia is a condition whereby sufferers blood does not clot properly. We have 13 proteins in our blood and unfortunately those who have Haemophilia A, like Xavier are missing Factor VIII. Those with Severe Haemophilia A have less than 1%! This does not mean sufferers are more likely to bleed to death but they are susceptible to bleeds. As a Severe sufferer Xavier has sponantenous bleeds. These can be soft tissue, or joint bleeds. When he has a joint bleed his blood flows into his muscles and then into his bone causing long term damage to the bone which could lead to arthritis later in life. He also has Severe bruising which take longer to heal.
Fortunately Xavier's treatment is prophylaxis meaning he has an injection through his portacath every 3 days with the latest long lasting recombant factor VIII. This prevents spontaneous bleeds as much as possible and means his every day life isn't hindered by his condition.
Being told Xavier had Severe Haemophilia type A felt like being hit by 10 lorries. We had the wind taken out of our sails completely. However after the initial darkness we made contact with the Haemophilia Society and they offered invaluable support, shared experiences by putting us in touch with others in a similar position and gave us vital information when we needed it. Knowledge is power after all.
We've also been given amazing support from friends and family and now some of them are joining us to help raise funds for The Haemophilia Society U.K. (A non-government funded charity) and to raise awareness of Haemophilia by running the Takely 10k.
Please lend us and an amazing charity your support by donating, so they can keep up the fantastic work they do.
