Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In a moment of madness, i decided it would be a good idea to honour my Mum's memory and raise money for charity by... jumping out of a plane at 13,000 feet!! Now bearing in mind i can't go up into the loft without squealing and feeling dizzy, this will be quite a challenge, but one i am determined to do! I will be skydiving with Skydive Swansea on the 19th August.
After seeing what my mum went through with losing her battle against breast cancer, i know that EVERY PENNY COUNTS when it comes to trying to beat this awful disease that effects so many people.
My mum was the most amazing person. She was more than a mum to me, she was my best friend too, and i could tell her anything. She had a passion for photography and for gardening...our back yard rivalled Kew Gardens!! She was also totally nutty and we were always giggling about something! People used to joke that i was her clone as we were so alike.
She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. It was the year i was doing my A-levels, and it felt like my whole world fell apart. My mum was so brave and remained so cheerful, going through endless doses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, despite the news that the cancer was stage 3 and had spread to the lymph nodes. Not to mention she lost all her hair!
After battling for over a year, she was in remission and we hoped that we could put it all behind us. Mum was pleased that her hair grew back curly, because it had always been straight. She wasn't so pleased it was grey though!!
In 2001, the cancer was back and had spread all over. I remember when she broke the news to me that it was terminal, i felt like i couldn't breath. She was so unbelievably brave, always trying to stay positive and to make the most of the few months she had been given. She lost her battle on 16th January 2002, and the world lost an amazing woman, and i lost my best friend. Not a single day goes by when i don't miss her terribly, and most of all wish that my children could meet her. She would have been an incredible Nan.
The money you donate will help this charity keep improving breast cancer prevention, treatment and services. Scientists now believe that in ten years time, some forms of breast cancer will no longer be life-threatening – but that can’t happen without you.
I would be SO grateful if you would sponsor me (every penny counts!), it would mean the world to me and will make a real difference in preventing other people in the future go through what my mum and our family did.
Thank you.
Lucy
