The beautiful girl in the photo is my cousin Sophie who was born with a liver disease called biliary atresia, a condition affecting the bile ducts. At just 9 weeks old she underwent a lifesaving operation and has needed regular check-ups and tests since.
Last year the decision was made to place her on the waiting list for a liver transplant, which she was fortunate to receive in June 2013. Following a long operation and a few weeks in hospital she made an excellent recovery.
Sophie is now a bright and bubbly girl, living life to the full with her twin sister Megan. CLDF have helped Sophie and her family over the past 5 years and will continue to support her throughout her life.
CLDF is the country's lead charity supporting medical research into all childhood liver disease. It acts as an information hub for healthcare professionals and provides tailored support for young people with liver disease and their families.
