Story
Hello,
I am running the Robin Hood Half Marathon this year on behalf of two charities, The Osborne Trust and Phoebe Thomas’ Journey (Solving Kids Cancer). I’ve only really started running again recently so this will be a big challenge for me. I really appreciate any donations you can spare, however small. Thank you.
Phoebe Thomas’ Journey
In January 2016 Phoebe’s parents got the much-dreaded news that their 9 month old daughter had high risk stage 4 neuroblastoma.
Since then, she has endured over 20 cycles of chemotherapy, had high dose chemo and a stem cell transplant, 12 hours of surgery, 15 consecutive weeks as an inpatient plus more short stays, 3 stays in ICU, been on a ventilator twice had sepsis, pneumonia and renal failure and is now primarily tube fed due to her digestive system not recovering from surgery. Her neuroblastoma has become resistant to chemotherapy and has progressed further, so she is currently taking a targeted drug which is unlicensed for children in the hope that this will get the cancer under control. The Beautiful Phoebe is full of determination and fight.
Despite an extensive treatment regime neuroblastoma will not respond to therapy for up to 20% of children, and of those who do complete treatment up to 60% will relapse. This is why Phoebe’s family are fundraising so that if the best option for Phoebe is not available on the NHS, they have the funds secured to access it.
Phoebe’s parents, Naomi and Russell, say “Phoebe is an amazing little girl. She has coped incredibly well with everything that has been thrown at her. Her disease has been resistant to treatment, and we have seen time and time again just how sneaky neuroblastoma is. We know that in the future Phoebe may need to access treatment that isn’t available on the NHS, and we need to be prepared should this be the case.”
