Story
Thanks for visiting my JustGiving page!
Every year Skiing With Heroes enables a group of ex-soldiers with severe physical injuries or psychological disorders the chance to get their
lives back on track.
The challenging process starts with a seven day trip to Klosters in Switzerland. This unique opportunity gives these men and women - whose disabilities sustained at war typically include missing limbs, brain damage, blindness and the 'invisible injury' PTSD – a 'skihabilitating' holiday on the slopes. The week of adaptive skiing is proven to boost their confidence, rebuild their fitness and most importantly give them a really great time.
I’ve been selected as a volunteer for the trip in March 2015 and will be one of 20 Skiing With Heroes ‘buddies’ where I will assist a veteran in what I believe is one of the most gratifying sports there is.
Not only do the veterans benefit immensely from the skiing itself but after the trip Skiing With Heroes helps each ex-soldier to find employment, something which if faced alone can seem a near-impossible task after life in the forces. Now going into its third year, the impact Skiing With Heroes has had on ex-military personnel so far has been extraordinary. You can read the veterans testimonials at www.skiingwithheroes.com, in a recent article on the Mail Online (search Skiing With Heroes) or by watching the video at the bottom of this page.
I need to raise at least £1000 to earn a place on the trip so in April I'm taking on the Paris Marathon. It's my first marathon and in total I aim to raise £1500. Almost all of these funds will go directly to helping the veterans as Skiing With Heroes relies heavily on the generous hospitality of people in Klosters so donations go further and volunteer costs are kept to an absolute minimum.
Even though I’ll never come close to understanding some of the physical hardships these veterans have experienced or may continue to experience for the rest of their lives, running 26 miles is probably going to hurt a bit (particularly the chafing) so please spur me on and donate what you can!
And once the money starts coming in, I can’t back out!
