Some of you will know our story others might not…
On the 3rd of May 2021 our lives changed forever. Jamie, my amazing husband, and wonderful daddy to our two young boys, woke up with a headache, an hour later he vomited, and his speech was impaired, so an ambulance was called, and he was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a brain clot and bleed requiring extensive and multiple medical interventions including brain surgery. Our lives have changed forever. Jamie was in hospital for 124 days. Our two young boys did not see him during this time.
We feel like the luckiest unlucky people because despite all this Jamie has made more of a recovery than any of the medical teams thought possible, and yet our life is still dramatically impacted and challenging due to the long-term impact of VITT and brain injury this resulted in.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and taking part in our challenge. We want it to encourage friends to connect with each other and talk (it was talking to people that helped me the most during the last year), to raise some money for Different Strokes Charity, as they have provided us such great support and to make time for yourself because that’s important too, so I have learnt during this last year (even if it’s only for 21 minutes!)
Did you know: Every year 100,000 people have a stroke and a 1/4 of these people are under the age of 65. That's 25,000 younger people whose lives are changed in an instant. Stroke is also the single biggest cause of disability in the UK, but it's not always the visible disabilities that stroke survivors have to contend with, debilitating fatigue, cognitive problems and personality changes can also be a lifelong challenge, preventing them from returning to work or bringing up a young family. Different Strokes empowers younger survivors to reclaim their lives.
Love Kate, Jamie, and the boys x
