In October this year, I will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro to raise money for The Sailors' Society, a global maritime welfare charity that supports seafarers and their families.
The impact of Covid on sailors (who were in many cases, stuck on ships for over a year due to quarantine restrictions) underlined the vital work The Sailors' Society has been performing for more than 200 years in ensuring that seafarers' welfare remains front and centre in the maritime
industry. In providing a 24/7 support system to those miles out at sea, The Sailors' Society supplies high-level crisis response, meaning a reassuring phone call is at the push of a button.
At 5,895m, Kilimanjaro is a behemoth of the Tanzanian skyline. As Africa's tallest peak spanning 5 different climate zones, I felt it was appropriate to set an ambitious target of £2500 to match its lofty heights. After some rigorously methodical and certainly-not-baseless calculations, I've conservatively estimated that my long legs will take 90,500 steps on their way to summiting this titan. That works out at roughly 3p a step, so, if you're lucky, with a stride-length that could span the Zambezi in flood, you've got yourself a high-yield donation.
So please show support in any way you can; donate, read up about the lives of seafarers and the hardships they faced during Covid, or share this. Any support would be massively appreciated by me and those touched by the valuable work enacted by The Sailors' Society.
