Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

As many of you know our friend Jenny sadly lost her Dad to Motor Neurone Disease earlier this year.

So in his memory, we have decided to Wade/Run/Crawl the Grim Challenge 2011 - an 8mile Off Road Course taking place on 3rd December to raise funds and awareness for The Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Who better to explain the effects and impact this horrible illness than Jen herself;

'My Dad was diagnosed with MND when he was just 62 years old. He was told at the time that the life expectancy was on average only 3 years as he had the most aggressive form.

MND is a very progressive illness that affects the neurons in a persons body. This means that the sufferer can lose the ability to lift their arms, legs, head and even lose the power to swallow or speak. It goes through stages of rapid decline and then can plateau for weeks or even months making it a very unpredictable disease. The worst thing about it is that although the body can rapidly lose its functions, the mind is still fully able to comprehened everything that is happening to it. Now, in most cases this would be enough to crumble a persons spirit, but my Dad dealt with this awful progonsis with such dignity and never, ever once asked "why me". In fact he said he knew that the answer to such a question would be the fact he would be able tackle this disease head on; and would have the courage to assist the professionals wherever he could to try and find a cure for those that would suffer after he had gone.

My Dad passed away in July this year at the age of 64, exactly 2 years after being diagnosed. He knew there would be a cure even though it wouldnt be in his lifetime and this is why we are so keen to help raise funds for MND research because no one should ever, ever have to go through what my lovely Dad did.

Thanks so much to Kim and Lou for doing this amazing act of kindness for us and for all those that choose to sponsor. It means so much to me and my family and I know my Dad would be so proud too!!!'
