Story

Recently my Grandad has been struck with the rare and terrifying illness Guillain Barre Syndrome.

Guillain Barre (pronounced ghee-lan bar-ray) is a rare and serious condition. It occurs when the immune system attacks the nerves the brain uses to control the muscles. The nerves become inflamed and stop working.

Consequently the muscles become weak and can progress to: temporary paralysis of the legs, arms and face; paralysis of the respiratory muscles resulting in mechanical ventilation; as well as difficulty swallowing or chewing resulting in the need to be fed through a tube.

About 80% with Guillain-Barré syndrome make a full recovery. However, recovery from this illness is a long, hard process and involves several weeks/months in hospital and intensive rehabilitation.

This illness is terrifying for both the person who has the illness as well as the family and friends supporting the individual.

Please donate what ever you can to this worthy cause so I can make my Grandad proud and tell him the amount of money raised when he wakes from his sleep and comes off the mechanical ventilator.

Many Thanks
