My wonderful friend and colleague Nic shared the below post with our team last week to raise awareness and thought it would be great to combine with some fundraising to give back to this amazing charity. We are hoping to raise funds to contribute to a tablet (as demonstrated by Eden in the picture) which can be a vital communication source for kids and adults who have been diagnosed with Down Syndrome.
Eden is 7 years old and is the happiest little girl. Like all 7 year olds she loves singing, dancing and playing. Eden has her challenges and will have to work really hard to be independent. She is hard of hearing and wears hearing aids and her speech is very limited. She attends a school that focuses more on social learning such as going to the shops rather than mainstream subjects.
Although there are many great experiences with Eden, there are also some really negative ones which I'd like to share, from being told 'she should never have been born' and comments after sharing pictures on social media used so flippantly which can only cause upset and isolation.
A real common situation Nic's brother encounters is people referring to 'The girl with down syndrome' rather than 'the girl who has down syndrome'. Eden is a beautiful little girl, who happens to have a condition, her condition is not who she is.
We hope you love the picture of Eden using her tablet. Thanks for taking the time to visit our page and please only donate what you can afford.
Please get your odd socks on today and spread the word, and the link. Lets raise as much as possible for this great charity who provide vital support to hundreds of families.
