I am running the Great North Run this year to raise money for the MND (Motor Neurone Disease) Association in memory of my friend’s mum who passed away in 2008 just two years after being diagnosed with MND.
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurones. Degeneration of the motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing.
This is a really worthwhile cause but sadly one that is not as high profile as some of the other charities – MND have only been allocated 50 spaces out of 54,000 runners in the Great North Run this year.
The money raised will go towards research, providing support and advice to help those with MND and their carers to achieve the highest quality of life possible and towards campaigning for better care for people with MND.
Anyone who has seen me run will know this is a big challenge for me so please dig deep!
