RNLI Volunteer Seamus McDaid is walking the distance from Mizen to Malin Head in March to raise money for the Lough Swilly RNLI. Seamus is following in the footsteps of his late uncle, Jamsie Quirke, who was the first person to complete the route in 1978. Back then, Jamsie walked the 354 miles from Ireland's most southerly tip to it's most northerly point at Malin Head to raise funds for Saint Vincent De Paul.
This year, due to lockdown restrictions, his nephew Seamus is restricted to the 5km exercise limit, so will be completing all 354 miles of his journey on the highways and byways of Buncrana.
Seamus will begin walking for the RNLI on March 1st and will complete his journey on Wednesday 31st March at Ned's Point. Seamus will be walking approximately 70 miles a day over the next 5 weeks, so expect to see a lot of him out and about next month!
Everyone at the Station would like to wish Seamus the best of luck on his Mizen to Malin challenge and hope he completes the walk before his 50th birthday in May never mind in 5 weeks!
RNLI lifeboats in Ireland protect hundreds of communities through our 24-hour search and rescue service. They rely on the safest, most reliable lifeboats and modern stations to launch from. Irelands unrivalled coasts and inland waters are valued by local communities and visitors alike, with millions travelling to enjoy them, and work on them each year. But the water remains an unpredictable environment that can catch people out. People will always need our help and we will always be there to answer that call.
