Story
Yay!!! We did it!!
And yes, there are blisters...and no. there are no photos...I left my camera battery at home in the charger :-(. But we honestly did it, as my little toe and our knees & buttocks & lower backs testify. It was actually OK until the last 2 miles, which were horrible, frankly!
Despite leaving 20 minutes later than planned, we made it on time for registration. The morning was lovely- bright cloudy with a perfect breeze; the afternoon was somewhat warmer & sunnier so the total sun-block was needed (apparently my nose needs something stronger than total sun-block). We had stunning views over to Arran for the whole walk; the views of Hunterston A & the conveyer belt to Hunterston B were less appealing. However, we have evidence of neither because of my camera battery disaster.
Shyla & I walked with Kerry & Ridiculously Tall Colin and Darryl & Kai (9 yr old Kai putting us to shame by hardly complaining at all & by running some stretches). Laughs & banter kept us going but we could have done without the olfactory assault of the sewage somewhere outside of Saltcoats. We could also have done without the efficient-to-a-fault automatic public toilet in Fairley; its thorough self-cleansing between each use meant that it took 40 minutes for our group to each pay a visit...
The last couple of miles were endless & it was only the generosity of people who sponsored us (not to mention the thought of tea & cakes supplied at the end of the walk) that kept us going.
Thank you so much to everyone. We really appreciate it.
Love,
TEAM SHYLORR!!! (F**k, yeah!)
(The remark in brackets will only mean anything to you if you've seen Team America....)
So, we're walking 16 miles on 6th June (at least, that's the theory) to raise money for MacMillan and Polio Plus. Team Shylorr!.....Since we hate having to hassle people for sponsorship money, this seems like a nice easy way for us to raise money & for you to contribute to a couple of great causes. And you don't need to acquire blisters!
Lorraine's reasons:
Three of my relatives have died of lung cancer (one was in his early 40s- asbestos exposure) & my aunt is a wheelchair-user as a result of polio as a child and post-polio syndrome in her retirement. So I suppose those are good enough reasons for me to acquire a few blisters, backache & wrecked knees... Lorraine xx
Shyla's reasons:
I decided to do the walk, because I have always admired those who do something about helping others, whilst I waste time, just dreaming about getting round to doing something. So, when I had the opportunity to spend the day with a group of good people, doing something productive, without months of training, I just couldn't say no. It also means I get away from being a mum for a day, although a 16.5 mile walk is a bit extreme!!!!!...Shyla xxx
