In May 2015 I planned to run the Hackney half marathon .... unfortunately while training in April (accidentally climbing a fence) I tore my hamstring so was unable to run. 5 months on and I'm running the Oxford Half on 11th October 2015.
Some of you will know that almost two years ago my lovely mum was diagnosed with breast cancer through routine screening. You never ever think its going to be your mum until one day it is. 21 months on she is cancer free. My mum is so lucky and me and my dad and my brother and sister and Ruby the dog are even luckier and so are her grandchildren cause they get to grow up knowing her.
Apart from the fact that my mum is a tough as old boots, I know that one of the reasons she is still here is because so much time and research has gone into finding the best treatments for breast cancer and screening programmes. So much that because of her history, I am now involved in an early screening programme.
At the same time as my mum was diagnosed a dear friend of mine's father was also diagnosed with cancer and subsequently other dear friends and family members have also lost loved ones to cancer. Some of this is because many cancers are more aggressive and less common with limited treatment options available so need more investment in clinical research.
I'm swopping my goth boots for some black trainers and running the Oxford half marathon to raise money for Cancer Research UK. I'm doing this because I want other families and their loved ones to have an increased number of treatment options available to them. Investing in research ultimately gives increased understanding in how to manage cancers and provides more treatment options.
