Story
All proceeds go directly to our chosen charity we do not take any of the money raised, we are totally self funded.
In July 2012, Sue Smith, Angela Hamer and Ceri watkins will be tackling a 750 mile journey from Longhope in Gloucestershire to Longhope in the Orkneys. Sue and Angela will hitching their panniers to cycle unsupported over 11 days and Ceri will be walking over approximately 40 days.
There may be blood (although we hope not), definitely sweat and probably tears ....and possibly chocolate (well ok, definately chocolate) and we invite you to follow our progress (click here for the L2L blog) and raise funds for the RNLI.
Why the RNLI?
Its simple, Longhope Orkney houses a lifeboat station. The Pentland Firth, between the north coast of Scotand and the Orkneys, is Britain's most dangerous coastal area, On 17th March 1969, the Longhope Lifeboat "TGB" put out in heavy sea's to rescue a Liberian cargo ship "Irene". Radio contact was lost and the "TGB" didn't return. The next day a search by helicopter, plane and ship commenced and she was found upturned, near South Ronaldsay. All eight crew lost their lives. To watch tv footage of that night on STV, click here. Ever since that terrible night, the two villages have been linked.
Some of the money will go directly to the Longhope Lifeboat Museum Trust (click here) which was officially opened by the Patron HRH Princess Royal in 2002. The rest of the money donated will go directly to the RNLI, to aid the work done by this voluntary organisation.
