London Landmarks Half Marathon 2024 · 7 April 2024 ·
To all those who watch one born every minute and think that midwifery involves eating a lot of cake and drinking a lot of tea, my boss Claire and I are here to prove you all very wrong.
Neither one of us are ‘runners’ however we both signed up quite late in the day to tackle the pot-hole filled pavements (in all weathers) to train for the incredible London Landmarks Half Marathon on Sunday 7th April 24!
We dusted off our trainers (I had to buy new ones as I had used mine for painting the house in) and training commenced. After a few blisters, hip pain, purchase of a hip braise, a few other issues that we will not blame age on and training after a 12.5hr shift in the dark down country lanes, we still are not ready for this challenge lol! We may have to start and stop a few times on the day, but we still have 4 weeks of training to go and are 100% dedicated to this challenge and all for a very good cause.
We listened very carefully to our service users and our motivation (other than a cup of tea and a slice of cake at the end) is to raise money to transform the current Oasis birth centre into a welcoming, peaceful, serene and empowering space where pregnant people can birth their babies with joy and positivity! This will include new equipment such as the multi-trac birth system to support upright and mobile positions in labour, new lighting, sound equipment and fresh vinyl wall coverings.
Room 12 on the Oasis Birth Centre is currently a very clinical area, with blank white walls and an uninspiring ‘hospital feel’, and therefore this will be the first room to receive the ‘from bare to beautiful’ make-over!
This is such an exciting project, and something that will benefit so many expectant and new families in the community!
We are therefore asking that you get behind us in our training (give us a cheer if you see us jogging along the roadside in the coming weeks), and also have a think about whether you are able to make a donation (big or small) to this wonderful project that will most definitely improve the birthing experiences of so many pregnant family members, friends and neighbours in our community!
We thank you all in advance for your support and encouragement, and cannot wait to show you the end results!! The room make-over, not our blisters!
