Story
I’m taking part in GlowLondon walk with Jack, my mum and my cousin Claire, to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society in memory of my dad, who passed away from Vascular Dementia on 7th December 2022.
With 900,000 people living with dementia in the U.K., it’s hard to understand why it’s not more of a priority for our government. Families are left to practically fend for themselves after a diagnosis (if they’re even lucky enough to get one, with only 1-2% of people with dementia managing to obtain the right tests to get one), so it’s down to charities like Alzheimer’s Soc to provide the advice and support they need. Catastrophic costs of care are the next battle, and even when social care is secured, carers are exhausted, over-stretched and underpaid.
We were able to obtain great care for my dad, for which I’m truly grateful for, but it’s not lost on me that this was a luxury that many are not privilege to without huge sacrifice, which absolutely should not be the case.
