Story
I enjoy running (normally when it's warm) but this will be the first, and I suspect the only time, I will run a marathon.
In 2025 I'm going to be running the London Marathon to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. Prostate Cancer affects 1 in 8 men in the UK and they are all someone’s dad, husband, partner, brother, son, grandad, uncle or friend.
Seven years ago it affected me and my family, and it is for this reason that I want to raise as much as I can to help fund future research and support for those affected by Prostate Cancer.
If you are interested, this is my story.
Two days before Christmas 2016, following a routine blood test, I was contacted by my doctor to tell me that my PSA level was slightly raised and that, although I had no associated symptoms, she had arranged an appointment for me at the Rapid Access One Stop Clinic at Guys Hospital.
Two days after Christmas I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.
I tried to remain positive over the festive period, but it was not easy. It wasn't a very happy Christmas!
Fortunately tests indicated the the cancer had not spread beyond my prostate, and following a slight delay whilst an unrelated medical condition was resolved, I had a robotic assisted radical prostatectomy on 21st March 2017.
Fast forward seven years and I have been discharged from Guys, and although I must continue to have annual PSA tests for the rest of my life, I am cancer free and living a very normal and happy life.
Quite simply, if it wasn't for the treatment I received from my doctor and the team at Guys hospital this wouldn't be the case.
