In 2013 my son Matthew challenged me to run a marathon to support research into finding a cure fo Type 1 Diabetes. In 2014 I successfully completed the London Marathon in 4 hours and 15 minutes, whilst raising much needed funds for Type 1 Diabetes through JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). This charity funds research into the effective management of the condition and hopes to find a long term cure for this life threatening condition.
In 2015 my personal challenge will be to complete the London Marathon in under 4 hours which is a huge step up for me.
Diabetes came to live
with us on 06.09.10, when Matty was just 6 yrs old. In those four years he's had
over 14,500 finger prick blood tests, 3000+ injections in 2yrs of
injecting insulin with every meal and 400+ cannula changes since he has moved on to using an insulin pump. Each day adds a further 10 blood tests to his total in the daily battle to control his blood sugar levels, trying to balance food intake, insulin given and exercise taken along with many other factors, (heat, anxiety, illness, type of food, being excited.............).
Every donation, no matter how small, will help JDRF continue their work to improve the ways diabetes is managed and hopefully find a long term cure. JDRF also funds research into ways to predict the onset of this disease which will help others to avoid developing the condition.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Mark & Matthew
