Story
I am taking on the 2023 London Landmarks Half Marathon to support King's College Hospital Charity and to say thank you for the care George and I received in connection with our liver transplant.
George was diagnosed at King's with a very rare cancer, Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), in March 2019. At the time of diagnosis the cancer was in his bone, liver and spleen. He underwent a year of chemotherapy but a week after being given the all-clear, the disease returned. George began the next round of more aggressive chemo but it became clear that he would not survive the further treatment required to treat the disease. We sought alternative cancer treatment in the US which should have given George the chance to live a normal life; however shortly after returning to England his liver started to deteriorate. Over the next 18 months he developed portal hypertension, became severely jaundiced and his abdomen became severely distended. In December 2021 we were told that George would need a liver transplant.
Thankfully I was approved to be his living donor and on 1 April 2022 a team of the most talented surgeons, doctors and nurses removed George's badly damaged liver and successfully replaced it with 25% of mine. George's recovery was absolutely incredible! Ten months later he is in school full-time, plays football several times a week and is so full of life.
We will forever be grateful to King's for all they've done for us and running the London Landmarks Half Marathon is a small way to say thank you to them!
