Story
I'm back again! But this year I am Running the Runway with my 2 boys and my incredible Auntie, Gill.
In November 2016, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, can't believe that was almost 6 years ago! My boys have grown so much since then, and have learnt a hell of a lot about Breast Cancer! Not something a mother wants to explain to their 6 and 8 year olds! But, luckily they were amazing throughout the grueling treatment I had of 3 surgeries, Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy.
Within a week of diagnoses, I stepped over the threshold of Maggie's Highlands. Not having a clue what to expect, I just wanted information, and lots of it! I wanted to understand what was going on in my body and how the treatment would help.
I spent most of 2017 visiting the Maggie's Centre weekly, and some weeks, everyday! This was my safe place, I could be me and say or ask anything. I benefited hugely from their advice, various groups I attended and meeting people experiencing the same situations I was facing - invaluable! I attended many groups, such as, Breast Cancer Group, Younger Women with Cancer, Stress Management, Mindfulness, Relaxation, Fitness, Look Good Feel Good and Financial Benefits Advice. Even my boys benefited from the Children's Days they offer, and many rounds of juice and biscuits!
2022 has brought me forward to a milestone of 5 years without any cancer cells being detected. So to celebrate in style I have decided to try and raise a bit more cash for Maggie's Highland (all funds going direct to them) by running this 5k event.
In 2017 I completed my first Run the Runway, 1 month after my treatment finished, I was absolutely burst, at the start line! I had wonderful support including my Auntie Gill, who walked the event that year. Five years on, and may I add, over 10 stone lighter, she is yet again by my side and we are going to run the runway together.
I know financial times are difficult just now, but even if you could spare £1, we would be hugely grateful. Maggie's Centre's do not receive any funding from the government or NHS. They rely solely on fundraising to keep their centre's and groups running. Without this, there would simply be no support for people effected my cancer as a patient, family member of a friend. Let's keep Maggie's going. 🧡
Maggie's Highlands provides free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer and their family and friends across the whole of the Highlands. Maggie's offers a programme of support that has been shown to strengthen physical and emotional well being. Built in the grounds of Raigmore Hospital, the centre is a warm and welcoming place with professional staff on hand to offer the support people need to find their way through cancer.
