Story
As 2012 turned into 2013 I decided that this year I wanted to set myself a physical challenge i.e. not a challenge that involves sitting in libraries in preparation for an exam or something of that sort. And as its 2013, I thought 'Why not have a go at running 13 miles and at the same time raise some money for charity!?!’
Around 800 000 people suffer from Dementia, including 17 000 young people - which means their families are friends are affected by it too. I'm a part of one of those families.
Alzheimer's Society has done great work to support my family over the last 4 years since my Grandad was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia. An illness that is slightly different to Alzheimer's but with the same effect on the brain; forgetting everything and everyone that you know, which is really awful to experience. My Grandad doesn't know who my Grandmother is, that he has children, what clothes to put on in the morning, how to write his name or how to eat the top off a pie crust and put butter on a slice of bread. Things that we never even imagine not knowing how to do. And as it's a degenerative disease, it will only get worse.
By running this half-marathon and raising some money for them I hope that I can do my bit to contribute to the research into the cure and prevention of this disease for all younger generations and the care of those already 'forgetting'.
So roll on 20th October 2013! Until then I'll be wearing out my trainers doing plenty of training!
