Story
Hello,
Welcome to my JustGiving page and thank you for taking the time to visit, please also take the time to read the reasons below of why I am running the Virgin London Marathon this year.
Addaction
For over 40 years Addaction have helped and improved the lives of people affected by drug and alcohol misuse, they have turned around the lives of thousands of young people; preventing them from becoming long-term drug addicts and alcohol abusers, and improving the lives of thousands more family members and the wider community.
Alcohol and drug misuse cost the taxpayer around £38 billion each year. That is the equivalent of over £2, 500 a year for every family in the UK. At a conservative estimate, 300,000 children are growing up in families where a parent has a chronic drug problem and an estimated 1 million children are living in families where a parent is dependent on alcohol. Drugs and alcohol not only affect the person with the problem, the consequences affect everyone, whether it’s through someone you know, a friend, family member, or the community you live in. The consequences of this are vast: young people can develop long-lasting mental health, dependency and behavioural problems, which can leave them at risk of being excluded from school, becoming involved in anti-social behaviour, and vulnerable to the influence of older youths and gangs, as well as subsequent sexual health risks.
By donating, the money will go directly to support young people in their local communities, and as a result Addaction will:
- - Treble the services to young people affected by drug and alcohol misuse
- Set up centres that offer a range of services to young people
- Increase the number of other organisations that we can work with, sharing expertise to increase success.
Memory of John West
Raising money for a great cause such as Addaction and knowing that I have to raise a massive amount keeps me motivated and determined to train, even on a Saturday and Sunday (which is hard work!). But my main reason to hopefully complete the Marathon is Uncle John West. John spent a considerable time in hospital battling with Cirrhosis of the liver in the beginning of 2009, he sadly lost his life in March 2009 at the age of 57. John was very dear to our family and his friends and is terribly missed by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
If I raise over £1,350 the rest of the funds will go to the British Liver Trust http://www.britishlivertrust.org.uk/home.aspx
Please dig deep and donate whatever you can, remember......every little helps!!
Many thanks
