Story
In memory of Felix and Oscar.
Felix developed NEC at 5 days old and it was less than 24 hours between the onset of his symptoms and his death. This is the first time I have seen a charity directly researching NEC since my boys died. I wasn't originally doing the Tough Mudder for charity but this had appeared in my newsfeed so maybe it was meant to be!
After Oscar died at 27 weeks, a premature arrival (33 weeks) of both him and Felix seemed like the happy ending to a nightmare. However, at 5 days old our lives were destroyed when he died, due to NEC. His bowel had died and dissolved and there was nothing which could be done.
I'm fundraising for Action Medical Research who urgently need to raise the first £20,000 towards a vital piece of research into necrotising enterocolitis (NEC).Premature babies are among those most susceptible to this life-threatening condition, which affects up to one in 20 babies in neonatal units. It strikes rapidly and babies need urgent treatment.Tragically, in many cases once NEC is identified it can already be too late.More research is needed to stop necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) developing in the first place. The research Action is funding into NEC is studying certain types of factors within breast milk to understand their role in protecting babies from harm. The vital research could shed new light on ways to help protect preterm babies from NEC.
