Story
On 24th September 2022 I will attempt to roller skate 26 miles around the streets of Berlin, on my trusty Bauer Quads, to raise money for an amazing charity called 'Awamu'.
As many of you will already know, I love to roller skate!
It was my main mode of transport as a child / teenager, and thanks to the empty roads during lockdown; it has become a BIG part of my life once again!
The buzz I get from roller-skating is of the purest kind! As soon as I put the wheels on my feet, I get an overwhelming sense of freedom. Skating brings me into the present moment where my worries literally fall away, and I feel like I am flying!
My passion for skating recently led me to Southsea where I found an awesome community of skaters (from all walks of life), who regularly do a decent distance (at a decent pace), to music, on the smooth wide roads around Southsea and Portsmouth.
My home town of Lymington (rough roads and cobbled streets) doesn’t offer quite the same training opportunities, so my game plan is to eat clean, get as physically fit as possible, keep skating regularly, and blag 26 miles on the day.
Aside from this being a personal challenge, I would love to raise money for a cause that I feel passionate about!
My chosen charity is Awamu (meaning ‘Together’), who work with determined women in the slums of Kampala, Uganda, to change the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children.
Awamu’s unique model is to invest in women, and to be led by their knowledge and understanding of what is needed to make positive changes in their community.
Awamu know that children do best when they are supported and cared for in their own communities, among extended families, friends, and neighbours, so they empower women to gain new skills and the confidence to increase their income, regain control of their lives and take care of themselves and their families.
Earlier this summer, we did some fund-raving at ‘Together’ Festival in the Chiltern Hills for this amazing charity. I am still buzzing from the vibe, the music, the people, and the amazing dedication of the Festival Organisers / Awarmu Charity to raise money for this amazing cause! If you are looking for a family friendly festival for 2023, this one really is a hidden gem!
Any donation (big or small) will help to change the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children, so please give whatever you can!
