Story
I'm swimming in this ridiculous challenge to raise money for Level Water. They use the power of swimming to change the lives of children with disabilities across the UK. Everyone should have the opportunity to learn to swim and fall in love with the water.
On 25th January 2019 my whole world fell apart. After many months in hospital and multiple operations I had become septic. I had an above knee amputation within 24 hours. Fear of the unknown, not knowing what to expect and adjusting to a whole new way of living, was a source of great frustration , let alone coming to terms with the loss of my leg. I was in a very black place
Fast forward 2 years, although a relative newbie to the amputee world, life has changed. I have rediscovered my passion for swimming, not just in a pool, but also in the open water. It is the one thing I can do. It’s great for fitness, which as an amputee is so important, and swimming in cold water is awesome for mental health. The sense of freedom is phenomenal.
But not everyone has been as lucky as I have to find such a beautiful location that is accessible and inclusive. The power of swimming is life changing , as I have found. That’s where Level Water come in. If just one child with a disability gets the opportunity to fall in love with swimming , as I have done, then this challenge will be so worthwhile.
On 11th September at 11:00 I will be starting a 24 hour relay swim as part of Team Limibitless , at Clevedon Marine Lake in Bristol. We are a team of 6 with a variety of disabilities. This is way out of my comfort zone, but then that’s the whole point of a challenge….right.
Come and support us on the day
Thank you
