Dear friends,

 

As many of you know in about two weeks time I am embarking on the huge challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The mountain is 5,895 metres high and with its rough terrain and gradient will take a whole week to climb. I have been preparing both physically and mentally for months now but as the time is approaching I am feeling pretty nervous. The altitude is such that it is hard to breathe when you get near the top and many people have to give up before getting to the top. I am determined to reach the top. This is going to be the biggest challenge of my life and hopefully the most rewarding.

 

 

So what drove me to put myself through such a gruelling challenge? More importantly than the personal challenge, I want to raise money for the valuable cause which is Cancer Research.

It is estimated 1 in 3 of us will suffer from cancer in our lives and 1 in 4 cancer sufferers die. This is too many. Personally, I have had several members of my family and a close friend who have suffered from cancer. This made me realise life is precious, and although it sounds like a cliché; life is too short to have regrets and not grab it with both hands.

I am sure along the route there will be many times when I will feel close to quitting but the two things which will (hopefully!) get me through are: Firstly, knowing that my friends have supported me through sponsorship through the biggest challenge of my life. But more importantly, the reality check that climbing in the pitch black in the middle of the night with a couple of hours sleep with my legs feeling like giving up on me is nothing compared to the daily struggle and pain of those out there fighting for their lives against cancer.
