Story

You'll never hear the words 'Lisa' and 'Exercise' in the same sentence unless its something along the lines of 'Lisa never does exercise' so you'for have to forgive me for finding the thought of doing The Great North Run a bit daunting. However, if you read on I hope you will understand why I am doing it and why it would be amazing for you to sponsor me.

Unfortunately there seems to be something of a taboo when talking about rape and sexual violence, but in the UK over 400,000 women are sexually assaulted each year. It would be safe to say that this number is actually a lot higher as the stigma attached to sexual violence means many people do not come forward.

I understand that talking about rape can be uncomfortable. As a rape survivor I still find that the word sticks in my throat sometimes and I still panic about people's reactions when they find out. However, I am sick and tired of feeling like its something to be ashamed of and something to hide so I would like to say to anyone reading this if you have questions, just ask. Don't be scared to talk to people about it! Sometimes it's hard to talk about, but talking to my family and friends has been an amazing way to heal and I thank each amd everyone of them for their support over the last five years.

Unfortunately some people don't have anyone to talk to and to them places like Tyneside Rape Crisis Centre are a real lifeline. TRCC also provide education on ways to keep yourself safe when you're out and about and what to do if it should ever happen to you.

Thank you all very much,

Lisa. <3
