Story

Hi there and thankyou for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

For people that know me, you will be aware that I have a love of travel and exploration! This year, I decided I would do something a little different and try to raise some money for a worthwhile cause, whilst setting myself a personal challenge too.

In April 2014, I will be doing a 12 day trip to India, which will involve an organised trek, for 6 days. Hike the Himalayas in India entails six days of trekking starting at Dharamsala, the spiritual home of the Dalai Lama and finishing at Laka Got (3,550m) well above the Himalaya snow-line.

We will be trekking around 15-20km a day and camping outside (which will be a challenge in itself with the temperature drop at night!!)

Britain V Cancer is a very special and unique event as everyone taking part in the challenge will be raising funds for the cancer charity or hospice of their choice.

I decided I wanted to raise money for a charity, called www.ladiesfightingbreastcancer.org.uk

This charity helps to raise money to provide equipment and care to patients within a 70 mile radius of Birmingham. They aim to make the Birmingham Womens Hospital a center of excellence in this field.

The following are just a few examples of the equipment LFBC has purchased for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Cancer Centre in Birmingham since the charity’s formation in June 2000.

  • Faxitron X Ray machine to enable microscopic clarity for breast biopsies, lumpectomies and pathology samples.
  • DC Digital Camera, used in conjunction with the Faxitron, to create magnified images and provides ultra high resolution.
  • Tattooing Equipment, to aid reconstruction of the nipple. Surgical techniques for this process are limited and often unsuccessful. This state of the art technique provides women with another option to boost self confidence post surgery.
  • Mobile Mammography Trailer, enabling up to ten women an hour to be x-rayed in their local area liposuction Unit. This means that the disease can be caught early, increasing chance of successful treatment.

For those that know me well, you will also be aware that I lost my Mum to Breast Cancer in April 1980, when I was 9. Although I was very young, I remember the time very clearly and the pain and suffering that went with it. For me, this Trek and any money raised will be in memory of my beloved Mum.

I have also had a few Breast Cancer scares myself over recent years, (which fortunately have always proved negative ) but have been a stark reminder of the reality of being diagnosed with Cancer.

I know that this Trek, will be very heartfelt for me, and I will put my heart and soul into it!

I have been training (not as much as I would have liked) but will continue over the next few months, to get myself prepared physically and mentally for this challenge!

If you would like to donate an amount, I would be truly grateful and will ofcourse keep you updated on my progress.

Thanking you in advance,

Lisa X
