I am 43 years old i had my first seizure at 14 years of age , they were mild seizures at that time they are called absence seizures now unfortuantley with the absence I take Grand Mal seizures which are also known as Tonic Clonic. In the uk alone there are over 600,000 people with epilepsy the numbers are growing and because its not really heard of its not talked about. I felt alone when i was 14 no body really understood and i was embarrassed of it. When i was diagnosed people were frightened to be with me it was so upsetting at 14 year old to have this condition and have no one understand it. It is a condition that is so random it can happen anywhere at anytime and you are not in control of it. My medication has been changed so many times and what comes with trying to find the correct dose and tablet for me is mind numbing not only do i have the side effects of tremours i also have to wait around taking seizures until correct dosage is found to help the seizure it controls it , it does not cure it. I am constantly in and out of hospital getting EEG, ECG, BLOODS, MRI SCANS and many more. It does control my life i am frightened to go out on my own. It is hard to find a job that can accomodate my needs. Different people have different triggers that set seizures off. Without funding i wouldnt have EEG. ECG, MRI and look to make medication the right one for me so with your help this can actually happen i am so grateful along with all the epilepsy sufferers who do actually suffer in silence. This chosen charity walk for me is a challenge in itself as my trigger happens first thing in the morning and the walk starts at 8am so understandbly i am a tad nervous i hope i make everyone proud including myself. There doesn’t have to be damage to your brain for you to have epilepsy. You could have a medical condition in which it is quite common to also have epilepsy. Some of these conditions are tuberous sclerosis and cerebral palsy. In some people with a learning disability, the cause of their learning disability can also cause their epilepsy. When epilepsy begins in later life, it’s more usual for doctors to find a cause. For example, you may be recovering from a stroke . Or, you may have had an accident or illness at some time in your life that left some scarring on your brain. If i can take just a bit of my time to make people aware of the condition and understand how we need to so more for Epilepsy then I am going to be one proud person to say I have acheived something which i feel passionate about and that my contribution to this cause. Many Thanks :)
