Story
Thank you for visiting my Just Giving Page!
I have decided to challenge myself on a rather large-scale this year...
In June 2022 I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s tallest freestanding mountain, its peak sitting at 5895m above sea level. My climb is in aid of the Meningitis Research Foundation; a charity which aims to research and raise awareness of two serious diseases, Meningitis and Septicaemia.
As a student I was drawn to doing this challenge as meningitis is one of the major health risks for young adults in their first year at university. They are the second most ‘at risk’ group for contracting this disease. One in four students will be carrying meningococcal bacteria, which can cause meningitis in the back of their throats, compared to one in ten of the UK population. The bacteria can be passed around by coughing, sneezing, and kissing. Pretty much everyone will get a number of colds in their years at university, so you can understand how it’s easily passed around.
Shockingly, meningitis and neonatal sepsis are the second biggest infectious killer of children under the age of five on the planet, affecting more than 2.8 million people every year! They can kill you within 12 hours and are responsible for more deaths of children under 5 than malaria, measles, tetanus and AIDS combined. Meningitis Research Foundations work is providing better access to vaccines, health systems that can diagnose and treat children, and support to survivors of meningitis. It’s time to make meningitis a global health priority, so conquering Kilimanjaro can help do this!
It's going to take a lot of training and preparation, and possibly put my uni night life on hold for a bit, but it will be totally worth it!
Donating anything you can is going make a huge difference and help change the lives of so many.
Thank you for any donations and support,
Lisa xxxx
