Story
Hello everyone, Hallo ihr Lieben,
I am Lisa, 23, and studying English Language at Aston University. As a part of my degree I am going on a placement in my third year. I have chosen to work as a volunteer for VESL - Volunteers for Educational Support and Learning. I will be teaching English in a rural school in Sri Lanka.
English in Sri Lanka is incredibly important as without this skill young adults are unable to go onto study at University or gain employment within the tourist industry. Perhaps an even more important issue is that the two main ethnic communities within Sri Lanka (Sinhala and Tamil) share no other common language.
Spoken English is essential to help cement the newly found peace within the country and, after over two decades of civil war, help to provide communities with a shared means to communicate.
VESL has been working in rural schools within Sri Lanka since 2003 and their volunteers have been able to provide thousands of children with an opportunity to gain invaluable experience of spoken English that has been of a real and measured benefit to their future.
VESL is a charity and a not-for-profit organisation. I as a volunteer have been asked to fundraise towards the cost of setting up and running this programme as VESL receive no government grants or funding.
I will be placed near Ratnapura in the Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka. There I will teach pupils from grade 1 to 5.

Wie einige von euch vielleicht schon wissen gehe ich für mein Praktikum nach Sri Lanka um dort Schulkinder der Klassen eins bis fünf zu unterrichten.
Ich werde fuer VESL, eine Organisation für Freiwillige zur Bildungsunterstützung in Ländern wie Indien, Thailand und Sri Lanka. VESL ist eine Wohltätigkeitsorganisation. Ich als Freiwillige muss daher die Kosten für meinen Aufenthalt selber tragen. Diese sorgen dafür, dass ich in einer Sri Lankischen Gasfamilie untergebracht werden kann und rundum versichert bin.
Da VESL keine finanzielle Unterstützung vom Staat erhält, ist das die einzige Möglichkeit eine solche Organisation am Leben zu erhalten und den Kindern in Indien, Thailand und Sri Lanka die einzigartige Möglichkeit zu bieten von uns zu profitieren, um eine größere Sicherheit zu haben, später einen Job erlernen zu können, denn genau dafür unterrichten wir englisch.
