Story
Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high.
Five years ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I wasn’t aware how much this would change my life. Every day you are faced with a choice. Choose to ignore it and risk long term complications such as blindness, heart disease, kidney disease or loss of limbs, or choose to control it and reduce the risk of these complications.
Diet, sensible eating choices and exercise are a big part of controlling blood/sugar levels. I had been a regular in the gym for 10 years but with a new job and other things I wasn’t getting the time to keep it up, so last year I decided to start cycling. I started cycling in the evenings but the same reasons I couldn’t get to the gym were now stopping my evening bike rides. I am an early riser so I decided to get up earlier and cycle in the morning. So I was up at 5.00am and out on the bike at 05.15 which was when I tongue in cheek formed the 05.15 Club I am still the only member ! From July to the end of 2017 I had clocked up over 350 miles.
As I am celebrating my 60th birthday this year I decided I wanted to give myself a personal challenge and also try and raise a bit of money for charity. So by combining the cycling and the reason for doing it in the first place I have set this challenge for myself.
2,018 miles in 2018
I aim to cycle 2,018 miles using my road and spin bikes before the end of 2018.
The charity I am supporting is Diabetes UK as apart from myself many members of my family both living and those that have passed, suffer from this condition. I want to do as much as I can to help fight against Diabetes so that future generations of my family may be spared it. Any donation however small is gratefully appreciated and will certainly help the fight.
