Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running the Reading Half Marathon on 7th November in memory of my Great Auntie Phyllis who passed away in July 2021, aged 98.  I am hoping to raise as much as I can for a small, local charity that provided support to her throughout her time in the Reading area.

The Handybus is a charity that supports the elderly and disabled people to do their shopping, travel to medical appointments and to take part in social activities.  The Handybus is driven and supported by a dedicated team of volunteers, who make it possible for people continue to live independently.  Throughout lockdown, the Handybus wasn't able to operate as it usually would, but the volunteers continued to provide support to those who were isolating, doing their shopping and running errands.  My Great Auntie Phyllis was supported by Handybus volunteers throughout the pandemic and prior to lockdown, enjoyed many trips on the Handybus.

Small charities like the Handybus have been impacted hugely by the pandemic and anything you can give would be hugely appreciated - it is essential services like this can continue to provide support to those who need it the most.

I decided to run the Reading Half Marathon as running has provided me with a way to get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air over the last 18 months.  I have only ran one half marathon event before, so I'm hoping for a nice, dry November day and am looking forward enjoying the stadium finish at the end of the event.  Most importantly, I want to finish and do my best to raise funds to help the local community in memory of my Great Auntie Phyllis.
