Story

Hi All

Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page.

It's true, in order to mark turning 30 I am voluntarily putting myself through a gruelling 26 miles and 385 yards run; aka the London Marathon. In a moment of madness, I have also committed to raising a minimum of £2,000 for Capital FM's charity "Help a London Child".

Since my "successful" application, I have gradually come to terms with the fact that over the next few months my life will be far from enjoyable. The prospect of training at the crack of dawn on a dark, cold winter morning fills me with dread, eating endless bowls of pasta doesn't conjure up images of gastronomic delights, abstaining (well, of sorts) from alcohol isn't going to be easy and the fact that my weekends will all but disappear doesn't even bear thinking about.  However, on the bright side I will be the fittest that I've been since my Radley days, I will be able to eat pretty much anything I like and not feel guilty (bonus) and I will be thin (albeit with rather muscly legs).

On a more a more serious note, I hope that I will be able to increase awareness of the charities that Help a London Child supports and at the same time raise money for children who through no fault of their own have not had the same opportunities that I had while growing up.

It's definitely going to be tough, but I love a challenge and I hope the rewards will far exceed the pain. Bring it on.

If you'd like to sponsor me in the usual way through JustGiving, your personal details will be safe. JustGiving never sell them on or send you unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to Help a London Child. If you're a UK taxpayer please remember to tick the box for Gift Aid as this allows Help a London Child to reclaim basic rate tax from HM Revenue & Customs on the gross equivalent of your donation.

So please dig deep and donate now.

I'm also open to other ways of raising money.  So, if you'd like to offer a wager on what time I'll finish in, or dare me to do something ridiculous then let me know and if the price is right I might even consider it!

Thank you all for your support and generosity.

Training Update: So Far, So Good.

A lot of you have been enquiring about how my training is progressing, so I thought a short update would help to satisfy your inquisitive little minds.  There is no denying that trying to combine a work/training/life balance is almost impossible. However, I have made training until the marathon a priority and it has even contributed to my sanity during recent weeks.

I have successfully completed one of the hilliest half marathons in the UK in a rather surprising and respectable time.  As I write this update, the tightness of my right quad is reminding me that I am still recovering from my ordeal.

Since I've stepped my training up a notch I've sustained a fair few injuries and have become inseparable from my physio.  I have also acquired some new best friends and running partners, deep freeze, deep heat and ibuprofen.  Hopefully my injuries will remain of a minor nature and I'll be on form to complete my first ever marathon in a decent time. Fingers crossed.

After the marathon? Never say never, but I'm a middle distance runner and I'm most comfortable splashing through mud on a cross country course.
