Story
Running the London Marathon 2022 in support of Alzheimer's Research UK 🏃🏻♀️🏃🏾♂️
In memory of our amazing father who sadly passed away with dementia. Devotedly looked after by his son, Lun, and wonderful daughter-in-law, Hannah, Dad was also lovingly cared for by his daughter Ling and her 4 sisters. Moments of joy and laughter emerged from even the most difficult of times. Dad was intelligent, multi-talented, hard-working and sporty. The fond memories will always stay with us and guide us.
We are proud to be supporting Alzheimer's Research UK (ARUK) running the London Marathon 2022 in October. We are excited and undaunted by this challenge - no mountain is ever too high to climb!
We are supporting this charity to raise awareness and accelerate research into finding a cure for the diseases that cause dementia. There is currently no way to prevent, treat or cure the underlying disease. With your donation, researchers will move a step closer to stopping this illness from affecting us and our loved ones. We would be extremely grateful for your support.
A year ago, we both took up running to improve our well-being and fitness. Running whenever and wherever gave us a new-found sense of freedom. Extending our training to 26.2 miles will undoubtedly be tough but, with enough support and determination, we'll get there. If you see us walking/jogging/sprinting, give us a wave or a toot - it will spur us on to go the merry mile 👋🎺
Best wishes, Ling & Lun Kwan 💜💙
How your donation can help:
Why? How? When? Common questions asked when a loved one is diagnosed. Worryingly, when we become forgetful, is this the start of the symptoms?
Dementia is becoming increasingly common and expected to grow rapidly. It affects over 50 million people around the world. More than half of UK adults know someone who has been diagnosed with dementia. In 2019, dementia charities contributed £39.7m towards dementia research along with the Government contribution of £82.9m.
Alzheimer's Research UK are working in collaboration with Medical Research Council and another dementia charity to invest in a new Dementia Research Institute in the UK. ARUK are also partnering with global leaders like Bill Gates to revolutionise and advance the early detection of neurodegenerative diseases initiative.
Currently Alzheimer’s is diagnosed when symptoms such as memory loss appear, but the disease can begin damaging the brain up to 20 years before this point. Research suggests that being able to pick up these changes earlier has the potential to transform how and when we treat the disease. With your help, we can make breakthrough changes.
We have experienced the journey of caring and living with someone with dementia. If you are in this position as well, feel free to contact us with any questions - happy to help in anyway we can.
