Story
Our goal is to circumnavigate Ireland by sea kayak over 2 months in June and July 2019. The coast of Ireland is measured by the Ordinance Survey at 3171km. However, we expect our paddling distance to be around 1700km with several significant crossings, to reduce the distance. Much of the coastline of Ireland is remote and exposed to the full force of the Atlantic swell.
We are team of experienced UK based sea kayakers who work in the public sector in the UK ( a special needs teacher, a nurse and a university lecturer), as well as between us coaching sea kayaking and running kayak clubs.
As part of this challenge we would also like to raise money for the King George and Queens hospital charity. In particular we would like to raise money for an upper limb bike/ergometer for our amputee patients. Patients undergoing major lower limb amputation engage in long periods of rehabilitation and are often wheelchair dependent up until the time that they are ready for prosthetic limb fitting. The upper limb bike will allow our patients to keep as active as possible on the ward and help build their upper limb strength for the use of self propelled wheelchairs.
Many Thanks
