Story

On Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th of August 2010, Pete, Libi and Chris (plus a few friends) are hoping to swim as many London lidos in one day as possible. We plan to swim 400 meters in each pool and raise money for LEPRA supporting rural healthcare in Eastern Africa.  This is Libi and Chris' laid back way to support Pete who is running the London Marathon in April 2005.  Now why would anyone run a marathon I hear you ask and so I thought I'd paste Pete's words here so you can find out.  To read more check out Pete's marathon page here  http://www.justgiving.com/Peteathon

"Last summer I returned to Tanzania where I had lived for six years for a holiday. During a road trip with a friend the car we were in, was involved in an accident. Through no fault of ours, we hit a cyclist on a dirt track. Even though we were able to get the man to a hospital nearby he died later that night. It's hard to say that with better hospital conditions he may have lived as he was badly hurt. However the hospital did say that if they  had they been able to hold a supply of blood for emergency transfusions of the sort this man needed the result may have been different. The hospital was basic and did not have the simple facilities we take for granted. The experience made me realise just how fortunate I am. Even though I have lived a large part of my life in third world countries, the effects of the poverty can still come as a shock when seen so clearly. I wanted to do something to help, however little. Every day many people die needlessly from preventable illnesses. Nets to prevent malaria are relatively cheap and easy to make in the country, saving lives and creating jobs. Drugs to help ease those diseases which are sadly so common in Africa and India, such as Aids and Leprosy are available and, if provided to the communities affected, can change lives. Lepra is a charity which seeks to provide this type of help."

Now we aren't asking you to run any marathons - that's just for crazy people dressed as chickens.  Instead you could either;
1) Swim all 13 lidos with us
2) Swim/paddle 1 or 2 or 3 etc lidos with us
3) visit one or more lidos with us but rather than getting your hair wet, sun yourself by the pool drinking a beverage of your choice
4)DONATE lots of money!

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now.

We've got quite a few friends joining us on this adventure so they may have directed you here to sponsor them.  If that's the case don't forget to leave a note with your donation telling us who your specially sponsoring to swim.
