Story
This year Liberty Specialty Markets employees Darren Smart, Max Mallen, Michael Burle, and Samuel Spence will be taking part in the Virgin London Marathon 2017 on 23rd April. The team will be running to raise funds for our partner charity, WaterAid. Please support our team by giving what you can. Thank you!
The Facts:
- Across the world 663 million people live without safe water.
- 2.4 billion people don't have access to adequate sanitation, one in three of the world's population.
- Around 315,000 children under-five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation. That's almost 900 children per day.
Across the world, women are forced to waste precious time walking long distances to collect dirty water. Girls are dropping out of school because there are no private toilets, and young children are not surviving to see their fifth birthday because of preventable diseases.
WaterAid’s Mission:
With their partners, WaterAid develop plans that integrate these basic human services into their health, education, nutrition and many other areas of development. WaterAid put a special focus on promoting good hygiene behaviour, as it is critical to preventing the spread of diseases by maximising the health benefits of safe water and sanitation.
Liberty’s involvement:
In June 2015 Liberty Specialty Markets entered into a 3 year strategic partnership with WaterAid. Liberty’s resources are focused on one major WaterAid project in Madagascar, one of the world’s poorest countries, where 90% of the population lives below the poverty line and half the population does not have access to clean water. By supporting this project, we hope to transform lives and bring prosperity to the communities by:
· Providing safe water for over 35,000 people – including eight schools – through gravity water flow schemes.
· Providing 8,870 people with access to improved toilets and hygiene practices.
· Working with local governments to widen the impact of the project to work towards universal access to clean water and toilets.
