Story
On Sunday 16 October Rosa & Liam are taking on the Manchester Half Marathon to improve the quality of life of men with advanced prostate cancer.
Rosa is a PhD student working with Dr Liam Bourke at Sheffield Hallam University on research looking to improve treatments for men with advanced prostate cancer. Rosa's interest in cancer research began at the age of sixteen when she was diagnosed with a type of blood cancer called Hodgkins Lymphoma.
"My experience during my illness wasn't great, so I wanted to turn this around and bring something positive out of the situation and decided on a career in oncology."
Rosa's PhD Supervisor Dr Liam Bourke has been working with the Cancer Research Team at Sheffield Hallam to develop new treatments for over eight years. Evidence suggests that men who are physically active after a prostate cancer diagnosis have better cancer survival rates than men who aren’t.
Rosa & Liam are running the Manchester Half Marathon to raise funds to support an early stage trial as part of Rosa's PhD. This work aims to reduce the need for invasive and debilitating procedures and could also have a beneficial impact on responses to treatment. Most importantly, it could improve the quality of life of men going through treatment and potentially redefine best practice for cancer care.
