We are Lewisham Citizens, an alliance of faith, education, charity and community organisations working together for justice in our borough, as part of Citizens UK. In response to the Covid-19 crisis, we are fundraising to support the most vulnerable members of our communities with things like food and internet access.
Revd Edd Stock, Priest at Holy Trinity Church Sydenham and Forest Hill, is leading the way by running the London Marathon on a treadmill:
- 'On Sunday 26th April at 10am, the day the London Marathon would have taken place, I will attempt to run the full marathon on a treadmill in my vicarage, at the same time as leading our livestreamed Sunday morning church service! This is to raise urgent funds for us as part of Lewisham Citizens to support our neighbours who are struggling through this crisis. We have started by creating food parcels for local families we know are in need, but there is so much more we can be doing and it is only possible when we work together. Please donate generously!'
In Lewisham this will be primarily for:
- emergency food parcels, as Holy Trinity Church in Lewisham have already started making for families from local schools who are facing food poverty
- internet and IT equipment, as we have provided for some of the undocumented mothers in our national diaspora leadership team who can now participate in meetings online
- hardship funds for where emergencies arise, as St Mary's primary school have used to pay to fix the oven of a struggling father so his family could eat hot food
If there are any leftover funds, they will go towards supporting any smaller, struggling member organisations to continue campaigning with their Citizens alliance over the next year.
