Story
Hi Everyone,
As some of you will know, I am running the London Marathon 2019 for the Salvation Army. I didn't really plan to take part until something happened to my best friend, Joe, which has changed not only his life, but most of the people around him.
Joe and I have been best friends for 15 years and have recently come back from a years travelling together.
Joe did not want to come home, so he stayed in Australia completing his second year. This trip filled Joe with confidence and life and he relished every moment of the adventure. When his second year visa ran out, he had to come home but did not plan on staying at home for long. He wanted to find some work, save a bit of money and get back on the road to start a new adventure. New Zealand was the next place on the list.
After a few weeks, he found some work and on the weekend celebrated with a few drinks. On his way home from the night out he was attacked randomly and put in a coma for many weeks and is now wheelchair bound.
Please read Joe's story here:
Joe still has a long way to go, but is making amazing progress with his recovery and continues to surprise everyone with his spirit and willingness to get better. For those who know him will also know that his charm and sense of humour are keeping everyone else around him positive and smiling!
The reason I have chosen the Salvation Army as my charity is due to the invaluable support they showed his family during his time in Kings Hospital. While he was in a coma, they put the family up in self-service apartments on a complex a very short walk away from the hotel. They did not ask for any payments and said that they could have the apartments for as long as necessary. This allowed the family to be by Joe's side within minutes rather than the 3 hour commute from Ramsgate, his hometown.
The Salvation Army only asked for a donation from the family at the end of their stay, if they chose to do so. This made me want to give something back in response and to show my support to my best friend and his amazing family.
If you are able to donate, small or large, please do. It would mean a lot to Joe, his family and the Salvation Army.
Thanks for reading.
Lewis :)
