Story

Can you help me to raise funds for vulnerable children and families living in Aberdeen?

This year, during Offshore Europe, I will be dancing in front of a large audience at the Beach Ballroom in aid of Aberlour, Scotland’s leading children’s charity. I hope to raise as much money as possible for this important cause, and will be putting myself through only 8 weeks of intensive dance training in order to do so!

With my only dance experience being in Aberdeen’s finest club scene this will certainly be a challenge which I am both nervous and excited about.

Here in Aberdeen, the charity runs Aberlour Options – a service which looks after children with disabilities and works with families to take the strain off them.

Aberlour Options is a residential service which offers short packages of respite care. Many of the children cared for there have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder and may have little or no verbal communication. Caring for these children full-time is very demanding and naturally, parents need a break from time to time. Respite care provides a lifeline for families who might otherwise crumble under the strain and all funds raised help to keep this vital service running.

Making a donation to my sponsorship page is one way you can help to make a difference to these families. Here are some ways the funding can be used:

·         £100 pays for taster sessions of sport and leisure activities for an autistic child, to help them work on social skills, through careful exposure to new environments, groups and  experiences

·         £300 pays for a store cupboard from a specialist provider, for the very many toys and art materials which make Aberlour Options a fun and exciting home-from-home for young children

·         £500 pays for new desks from a specialist furniture provider, to be used in a brand-new purpose-built extension meant for educational work.

·         £700 pays for a fibre optic star cloth which provides a sensory experience that is calming and soothing, especially at bed-time

·         £800 pays for electronic tablets and software packages to help autistic children who cannot communicate verbally, to express their feelings.

·         £1,000 pays for a brand new, comfy sofa for children to chill out on, after a hard day’s play!

Please help and make a donation today. Together we can make a difference to Scotland’s children!

About the charity

1 in 4 children are living in poverty in Scotland. That isn’t right. Not all children are born with an equal chance. We know that by working together we will beat poverty and discrimination. With your help, we will reach more children and their families earlier, before it’s too late.
