AICR (Association for International Cancer Research) is a  small cancer charity in terms of staff (24) but a big charity in terms of cancer research funding. It currently funds  over 191 cancer research projects worldwide that investigate all types of cancer. As I am paying for the Trek myself, all money donated goes directly to funding the highest level cancer research.

Personally, AICR have provided me with funding that has been invaluable for my research into the prevention of colon cancer by aspirin.  They supported me when i was  a young scientist (a few years ago now!) which I am very grateful for. Their support allowed me to develop an independent research group and make a number of discoveries which have led us to targets for novel cancer preventative agents. Therefore. when this oppertunity arose to raise funds for the charity i was very happy to give something back. 

As with most families, I have personal experience of the devastation that cancer brings. My partners mum died at a very early age with colon cancer and my aunt is currently battling lymphoma. The only way to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with cancer is funding research into the causes and cures.

The running costs of a lab are high but even a small donation  could make a big dfference. It may be the project your donation  goes towards that makes a major breakthrough.
