Every Little Helps...
When I was 8 years old my family immigrated to Canada. I know, in part, what it feels like to arrive in a foreign land, not knowing anyone, not being able to speak the language, feeling isolated and alone.
I know also that the feelings I felt then does not even compare to what refugees must feel when they flee violence and persecution in their homeland. Most of the refugees are highly-educated and had well-paid jobs before war ravaged their countries. During their refugee journey, they experience destruction of possessions, murder of family members, torture, terror, and hopelessness. They arrive in the UK with almost nothing but the clothes they are wearing and face the difficult challenge of starting over in a new language and culture with limited help from the government and voluntary agencies.
Refugees' deepest wounds are often emotional. Even after reaching safety, many refugees still struggle with fear and loneliness. They need welcome, friendship and a place to belong.
Upbeat Communities offer basic support, from English classes to help refugees integrate into their new environment, skills training in everything from first aid to job interviews, mentoring to equip refugees for the world of work, to community-building activities such as meals,
days out and sport.
