Story
Ollie, Dave and Tom are friends of Leisure Lakes Bikes and the guys at the Preston Hub store. Being keen cyclists and suckers for punishment... a challenge......they have decided to embark on an epic ride from London to Barcelona with only their legs and wheels to get them there!
The ride will start on May 14th and they will be riding the 1167 mammoth miles spread over 9 days! As Leisure Lakes Bikes are proud partners and fundraisers for the British Heart Foundation we are sponsoring the guys to help them get through the trip in tern for them raising money for the BHF.
Fundraising for the BHF will be done alongside a charity of rider Tom's choice NeST (Nephrotic Syndrome Trust). Tom and his family have an affinity with the charity NeST so Tom's employer have kindly offered to match whatever is raised on Just Giving to so funds made will collectively be split between the two Charities.
Nephrotic Syndrome is a serious and debilitating kidney condition that affects around 10,000 people in the UK each year - and many of these sufferers are young children. NS isn’t a disease in itself, it’s a condition that can be caused by a range of different diseases, which damage the glomeruli - the tiny filtering units in the kidneys.
Since the BHF was established the annual number of deaths from heart and circulatory diseases in the UK has fallen by around a half.
In the 1960s more than 7 out of 10 heart attacks in the UK were fatal. Today, at least 7 out of 10 people will survive.
The BHF is the largest independent funder of heart and circulatory disease treatment in the UK.
Heart and circulatory diseases cause around a quarter of all deaths in the UK, that’s more than 160,000 deaths each year – an average of 460 deaths each day or one every three minutes in the UK.
There are around 7.6 million people living with a heart or circulatory disease in the UK: 4 million men and 3.6 million women.
Some of us are unfortunate enough to know someone who has suffered from a heart related illness or even lost their life. Through fundraising, promoting a healthy lifestyle and raising awareness of the symptoms of heart related illnesses; we can do our part to help the British Heart Foundation beat the heartbreak caused by these illnesses forever.
