Story

I will be running this event June 2018.

About this event

The race is deep in the Amazon Rainforest, an unspoilt expanse of boiling jungle and breath-taking cloud forest running from the Andes mountains to the Madre de Dios River.  It’s lowlands are only accessible by boat and it’s impenetrable nature.

Technical information
  • Location: Manu National Park, Peru
  • Terrain: Jungle, Rain Forest and Cloud Forest
  • Distance: 230kms
  • Stages: 5
  • Daytime Temperature: 30°C

A 230km race split into 5 stages of suffocating jungle undergrowth, river crossings and cloud shrouded mountain valleys.

Runners should expect choking humidity; the body pouring sweat in an effort to stay cool.  There will be deep mud and heavy rain.  There may also be periods spent running in darkness, following the marked route by head torch.

As a self-sufficient race you are responsible for carrying your entire kit, including food, safety equipment and a minimum of 2.5 litres of water which can be re-filled at checkpoints along the stages.  You’ll need some specialist gear to take on the hostile rain forest.

WHY

It would be a shame to miss an opportunity to give something back and this is why I want to raise funds for “The Neuroblastoma Society”.  No money raised will go towards any of my trip, I will be self funding this trip.  Not many people will have heard of the cancer called Neuroblastoma and I only became aware ofthis when I attended a fund raising event of a little boy called Alex. A few facts about this cancer:-

Neuroblastoma is the most common solid cancer (cancer which forms a tumour) diagnosed in babies and young children.

Approximately 100 children in the UK are diagnosed with neuroblastoma every year, the majority of whom are under 4 years old.

Neuroblastoma is one of the most lethal of all childhood cancers.

I’m sure you will agree this is a worthwhile cause and I have now set up a “just giving page”  for any donations.

Here is what your money could buy

£500 will buy 2 years' supply of DNA sequencing chemicals OR maintenance and access to a sophisticated research microscope

£1,000 will buy 6-12 months supply of antibodiesfor studying preclinical models OR equipment for analysing proteins inneuroblastoma cells

£3,000 will buy analysis of the micro RNA profileof 15 neuroblastoma tumours OR the fees for registering a known treatmentproduct in a clinical trial with the Medicines and Healthcare productsRegulatory Agency

£5,000 will buy 6-months supply of laboratory chemicals and disposable plastics for a neuroblastoma research scientist

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING THIS.  Lee
